Sonia specialises in childhood portraiture, using historical alternative processes, especially wet plate collodion photography, and salt prints.
Wetplate collodion is a historical process taking us back to 1850s and the dawn of photography. Each print is unique, captured directly on a piece of glass or blackened tin using a large format camera with bellows, and an on-location darkbox or in studio darkroom. Sonia's raw historic processes employ an Anthony Bellows 8x10in wetplate dedicated camera and a Whole Plate Chamonix view camera. She is dedicated to these processes not because they are novel, but because the production by hand of these prints brings her close to the subject, close to nature's marvel of light, and closer to herself.
